PITTSBURGH, PA (May 5, 2016) — Hip-Hop artist and community activist Jasiri X will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the Chicago Theological Seminary at 2pm on Friday, May 13, 2016 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL. Jasiri will also deliver the 2016 commencement address to the graduating class.
The Doctor of Letters degree is considered the Chicago Theological Seminary’s (CTS) most prestigious recognition, reserving the honor for those whom the institution believes has, in their work and in their lives, embodied the seminary’s core value of “transformative leadership toward greater justice and mercy in church and society.” In awarding this degree, the Seminary publicly recognizes the contribution honorees have made to bring about justice & mercy in society.

Jasiri will be joined by a distinguished group of colleagues such as African-American feminist, theologian, and author Dr. Jacquelyn Grant, recognized as one of the founders of womanist theology. Jasiri will be presented the award in recognition of his life and work as an artist who is shaping Hip-hop as well as his community.
“It is an extremely humbling experience to be honored in a similar fashion as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who also received his honorary doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary,” says Jasiri. “The CTS bestowing their highest honor, Doctor of Letters is a spiritual confirmation, of sorts, that in my efforts, I am doing something right.”
