I am a product of a HBCU. I attended Prairie View A&M University.
I first stepped on the yard in 1997. Twelve years later, some would agree that the entire HBCU culture, outlook, and overall impact has declined greatly. In an effort to bring back the concept of the “Renaissance Man”, Morehouse College administration enacted its new “Appropriate Attire Policyâ€.
Dr. Robert Franklin has expectations of males being well-spoken, well-read, well-traveled, well-dressed, and well-balanced is being pushed campus wide.
The policy bans do-rags, grills, sagging pants, and cross dressing. Some bloggers see this policy as a specific attack on LGBT students but the administration has declined that theory. Some people feel that this is an attack on Hip Hop culture? While some students are not in total agreement with policy, there are many saying they understand the need for it.What do you think? Is this an attack on Hip hop culture? Is this policy needed nation-wide?
