Judge Sonia Sotomayor

Judge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed by a vote of 68-31 today making her the first Hispanic and third woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court.

Latino groups across the country such as Houston Wise Latinas are hosting parties tonight in celebration with a host of community leaders.

“The confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor will do for Latinas what Thurgood Marshall’s confirmation did for African-Americans,” said Lisa Hernandez, Wise Latinas founder, in a press release. “It gives us all hope that our courts reflect a jury of our peers and that our country embraces all its citizenry.”
