According to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), reading amongst young people between the ages of 18-24 years old has drastically dropped since 2004. More time is now spent in front of the television watching shows that are not improving the mind.
Library cards have been replaced with credit cards; books are only used to prop up broken tables or used as food trays at home; most do not want to read a newspaper but will spend hours on Myspace; video games are more popular than the art of reading. So why should we read books?
Studies have shown that over extended hours in front of the computer screen or television stifles the creative side of us. We would rather the shortcut of sending a text message versus holding an intelligent dialogue.
So the next time you want to do something fun…try picking up a book.
