(Source: Nature’s Medicine Cabinet) I must admit I had a great time at this month’s seminar sharing my journey of overcoming sugar addiction and the consequences that came along with it! Many expressed that what was shared was definitely needed for a community that is unknowingly suffering from preventable diseases due to over consumption of sugar. So, here are a few points that were discussed at the seminar.
The first thing we came to understand was that sugar (in the form of complex carbohydrates) are an essential part of our diet. However, it is when we journey over to the other side of refined and processed sugars that we
get into trouble; in particular with high fructose corn syrup and sucrose (table sugar)- the worst types one can consume. In that, we also learned that the average amount of sugar we SHOULD consume a day is 6 teaspoons. Yet, the average person consumes about 26 teaspoons per day!! No wonder so many of us are sick!!!
It is this over consumption that starts us on the path to obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and a host of other bodily conflicts. It was noted that just by cutting back on sugary beverages alone that our sugar intake could decrease drastically. A demonstration was done to prove the point by showing how many teaspoons of sugar are in some of the everyday beverages and snacks that many consume on a daily basis and the results were shocking!
We also looked at how fructose is mostly metabolized in the liver and since we consume too much, is a major cause for non alcoholic fatty liver disease that is very prevalent in this country. So no, one does not have to be an alcoholic to suffer from this condition. Just eat sugar!!!
Lastly we learned a lot about how sugar is a major food source for candida (yeast) and whether one is male or female will be affected by wastes these bacteria produce. Conditions such as eczema, boils, bad breath, yeast infections, athlete’s foot, jock itch, and the list goes on can result from candida overgrowth that thrives off of sugar. And since bacteria outnumber our cells 11:1 those sugar cravings we may have may not really be us but them dictating to us that they want more sugar. What better reason to make a decision to reduce the amount of sugar we consume that helps them to live!
