Social media mischief-making? – Twitter suspends then reinstates Minister Farrakhan’s account

(Source: FinalCall.com) In the latest move against the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s Twitter account, the social media giant took several steps over a recent weekend, leaving supporters of the Muslim leader wondering about the company’s motives.

On Jan. 17, the Minister’s Twitter account displayed a message notifying users his account was suspended. None of the tweets from the account were visible. The next day, during the afternoon of Jan. 18 the platform reinstated it claiming the suspension was an error. According to the Washington Examiner, a Twitter representative said, “the account was caught by our spam filter in error and has been reinstated.”

The publication also reported that upon reinstatement, the account didn’t immediately show all of the Minister’s nearly 400,000 followers. The page only became available again to some users when it was first reinstated.

This comes several months after the account was frozen in June 2019, due to a tweet posted in October 2018 which Twitter claimed this post violated its policies.

However, Jesse Muhammad, Min. Farrakhan’s social media manager, says otherwise. “It’s that same tweet that during October 2018, that [Twitter] stated, publicly, did not violate their policies,” he told The Final Call. When the account was frozen, previous tweets were still visible on the page, but no new tweets were permitted to be added to the account.

Twitter notified Mr. Muhammad of the change via email, citing two tweets from October and June 2018. In order to unlock the account, Twitter says those tweets must be deleted.

Prior to this latest move, efforts to silence Min. Farrakhan on social media and other online platforms dates back to June 8, 2018 when Twitter first de-verified his Twitter account (@LouisFarrakhan) by removing his blue verification badge which lets people know among other things that “an account of public interest is authentic.” In May 2019 Facebook, which also owns Instagram banned Min. Farrakhan’s accounts along with right-wing pundits and Alex Jones of InfoWars.

Supporters and allies of the Minister, proponents of free speech and freedom of expression and people of various backgrounds and ideologies responded en masse to the move by Facebook in condemnation of the action. The last Twitter move also garnered quick condemnation.

“No matter how good of intentions [executives] may have with policies they have implemented, it has been glaringly hypocritical when it has been applied to Minister Farrakhan’s account,” Mr. Muhammad stated. “So whatever their definition of violating rules, hate speech, violations dealing with hateful conduct, they themselves have not been clear on what these types of things actually mean when they apply it to people, particularly Minister Farrakhan, who we feel, and know, and confidently can say, has never violated any of their rules.”

Previously, Mr. Muhammad told The Final Call that to delete the post would send a signal that those against the Minister were correct in their “lie” that the tweet was hate speech and anti-Semitic.

Vicky Dillard, a social media and online commentator said this situation reminds her of when she used to watch the Minister on national talk shows.

“I remember seeing clips of him on the Donahue Show and other mainstream White media corporate outlets, and they couldn’t stop his power no matter how much they tried to defame him,” Ms. Dillard said. “So, they just stopped bringing him on altogether, but he continues to grow in power. So now, without any real major effort, he became such a powerful force, even on social media. It’s the same thing of trying to silence a man that you can’t silence,” she said.

Ben X, a member of the Nation of Islam and online content creator, said the latest fiasco proves Min. Farrakhan is who he says he is.

“My whole stance is the same as the Minister’s when it comes to Facebook and Instagram,” he said. “He already said that free speech is not real… He said when America or a world is built up on falsehood … It’s truth that will bring down America. The fact that they deleted his Facebook, Instagram, they terminated my YouTube and now they’re messing with his Twitter, it’s just confirmation that he is who he says he is and that he’s teaching the truth,” said the young influencer.

Other supporters of Min. Farrakhan took to social media and expressed their discontent with the situation. Dr. Boyce Watkins, noted financial expert and owner of The Black Business School, reposted a screenshot of Jesse Muhammad’s tweet updating his followers on the status of the Minister’s account. Twitter user @19Keys posted “Fear of the truth. Those who control these platforms will allow you to be subjected to lies, death, porn, propaganda etc. But truth is too powerful to allow.” User @QueenNzinga13 posted a screenshot of the Minister’s account reinstated, tweeting “That’s what I THOUGHT.”

“They banned The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan from Facebook and Twitter why, knowing that he is the only uncompromising voice for the upliftment of black people, why, what do they fear? What do they know about him that some of us are oblivious to?” Jason X Turner posted on Facebook.

“No Freedom of speech. They simply don’t want the Minister to positively influence his people. Meanwhile we are bombarded with; sexual explicit post, post of folks attacking each other, post of folks calling black people n!&&ers and all kinds of profanity. Twitter is unfair,” tweeted @ProblemNumber31.

“Stupid move, Facebook. Stupid move, Twitter. No Army can withstand the strength of an idea whose time has come,” Henrietta Bibbs wrote on Facebook.

Jesse Muhammad said Min. Farrakhan has used Twitter to uplift the masses. “Since 2011, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan has used his platform with respect, he’s used it with dignity, he’s used it to uplift not just Black people, and Black users of their platform, but all people of humanity,” he said. The Minister has answered the questions of over 5,000 people from around the world on the platform, he added.

“This man has been a thorough representation of how we should properly use social media for the upliftment of humanity,” Mr. Muhammad said.

There are many on social media who depend on Min. Farrakhan’s tweets for guidance and knowledge. “I am a teenager now, but I have been around people in the Nation of Islam ever since I was a little boy,” said Karriem Armstead, 16.

“When I turned 11 years old I really started listening to Minister Farrakhan and his words have influenced me to become a pretty good young man. I feel that he is a very good example of what a righteous man is. I strongly believe that if other teenagers would follow his leadership we would do better,” he said.

Tiffany Haywood agreed. Through social media, the Minister can connect with diverse groups of people, she explained. “His message is not just for the Nation but provides profound wisdom and guidance on the way forward and how to transition to a lifestyle of peace,” she said.

“There is a need for the Minister on social media also because his messages are timeless and can be applied to the times we are facing,” added Ms. Haywood.

“They don’t like what he has to say,” said Father Michael Pfleger about Min. Farrakhan. Father Pfleger is pastor of St. Sabina Church in Chicago and is a longtime friend of the Minister. “They’re afraid of people being educated and hearing the truth that he speaks. They’re afraid of him. They’ve always been afraid of the truth, so this doesn’t surprise me,” he told The Final Call.

He stated that Twitter released the suspension after the backlash Facebook received banning Min. Farrakhan’s account in May.

“I think they released the suspension because they heard a lot of anger from people, going back to the whole Facebook suspension. I think they realized there was a real outcry with people saying, ‘don’t you dictate to us what we can and cannot receive,’” said Father Pfleger.

The White Catholic priest was one of the faith leaders to stand up and strongly condemn the Facebook decision. He subsequently invited his longtime companion in the fight for freedom and truth to address the ban from the pulpit of his church at a May 9 community event and rally in a show of support which drew a standing room only crowd.

Hashtags #WeAreFarrakhan, #IAmFarrakhan and #Farrakhan became popular within days of the Facebook and Instagram ban. Supporters began reposting the Minister’s content while condemning Facebook for their decision.

Ms. Dillard said this is a testament to why independent social media platforms are needed.

“You’re gonna always lose when your open enemy, the one who raped you, burned you, chopped off your body parts … When that’s the one controlling the narrative, and telling your story, you’re always going to be in trouble,” she said. “It’s a need for us to control our own narratives, control our own story and the connection between media and warfare.”

Father Pfleger agreed. “There must be and somehow we must create a social media that is controlled by the community,” he said.

“I think that’s why John Johnson started Ebony and Jet because he wanted the Black narrative to come from Black people, and he was tired of not reading the truth about the Black community. I think we still see that problem today.”

Jesse Muhammad says he will continue to watch how the situation plays out. But in the meantime, supporters of the Minister should keep doing the work, he stressed.

“This is the time, as the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan just told me a few days ago in a phone call—he said this is a great time for us to pick up our pace in the work of going after our people to invite them under this ark like Noah,” Mr. Muhammad said.

“Continue to hear the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan as the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches us. Continue to spread the clips. Continue to spread all the screenshots of his tweets and posts that he has done. Continue to spread the warnings. Continue to spread his warnings of guidance and messages about Iran, America and war. Continue to post.”

Twitter freezes Farrakhan Account

(Source: FinalCall.com) Twitter, one of the world’s largest social media companies, has frozen the official account of Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan under a new policy guideline. The decision came 60 days after Facebook and its Instagram platforms imposed a lifetime ban on the Minister’s accounts, leading to a backlash from those who respect and follow his work and those concerned about restrictions of free speech.

The move came amid mounting pressure on social media companies to regulate and police content and constant attacks on Min. Farrakhan from the Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish and White groups demanding he be removed from all social media platforms and repudiated in public life.

“This is definitely about a blatant and personal attack against the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan,” said Jesse Muhammad, social media manager for Minister Farrakhan.

Groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, which faces its own accusations of racism, and the Anti-Defamation League, which has been accused of being anti-Black, are among those who have led the anti-Farrakhan effort. “Obviously they continue to put pressure upon these executives in Silicon Valley to continue to remove the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan,” Mr. Muhammad said.

Twitter notified Mr. Muhammad in an email about the decision citing a post on Minister Farrakhan’s account from October 2018 that attracted nearly four million views.

“We received two notifications from Twitter, Inc., that the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s Twitter account will be locked up based upon a policy that they just added,” Jesse Muhammad told The Final Call. The notice, effective immediately, was emailed July 9, the same day Twitter announced new rules that will remove past tweets with language it deems offensive toward religious groups. The Minister’s account is still up on the platform but cannot be updated.

Mr. Muhammad said the policy appears to be “recrafted to target the Minister” as part of an ongoing and wider anti-Farrakhan media campaign.

Twitter Safety, the company’s oversight department that receives complaints about offensive content, said the policy is an expansion of Twitter’s “hateful conduct” policy to include a clause against posting “dehumanizing language” toward religious groups. It said the clause will apply to other groups over time.

Last year Twitter collected 8,000 user responses to a survey it conducted asking how it can modify its hateful conduct policy to include dehumanizing language. Twitter says the policy applies to content that dehumanizes others based on their membership in an identifiable group, even when the material does not include a direct target.

“What they decided to do was to troll back to the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s tweet that posted October 16, 2018 with the headline, ‘I’m not an anti-Semite; I’m anti-termite,’ ” Jesse Muhammad explained. Although there were relentless demands from groups like the Anti-Defamation League and others to remove the post, Twitter representatives at the time stated it didn’t violate their terms of service. Others see the change as an attempt to rob both Minister Farrakhan and the masses of people of the exercise of free speech guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Under the new policy, Twitter is now saying if Minister Farrakhan deletes the post, they will unfreeze his account, which Mr. Muhammad says is not an option. He said to delete the post will send a signal that detractors against the Minister were correct in their “lie” that the tweet was hate speech and anti-Semitic.

An appeal of the decision was submitted to Twitter by Minister Farrakhan’s Social Media team.

In early May 2019, Facebook and Instagram stripped accounts from Minister Farrakhan and several other public figures. In Minister Farrakhan’s case, there is no record of violence being incited from his words, nor any history of him calling for violence, wrongdoing or mistreatment of anyone or any group.

Many users, observers and social media policy watchers rejected the ban as politically motivated targeting. For several months after the ban was enforced, #WeAreFarrakhan, and words of the Minister were reposted, flooding the platforms with his image and viewpoints. Mr. Muhammad anticipates the same reaction with the Twitter decision.

“They obviously have not learned the lesson of the Facebook and Instagram ban,” he said. “You saw more of Minister Farrakhan’s videos, his words … more of the witness bearers coming out of the woodwork testifying of what he has done for them.”

Minister Farrakhan is on record advocating against negative expressions on social media—even when those who love him are responding to attacks against him. The Nation of Islam has codified Minister Farrakhan’s positions in a “Social Media Guidebook: The Wise Use of Social Media.” 

In speeches, Minister Farrakhan has said social media has been a tool that has freed the masses and the masses see him as a prominent voice in that awakening.

Dr. Jared Ball, professor of communications at Morgan State University, called for developing alternative and independent media outlets in the face of the bans and he sees the Minister’s words as constitutionally protected speech.

“My first thought is that all communication is political,” said Dr. Ball. “Whatever illusions we all have or are encouraged to have … about our media environment … all of it’s political.”

Advertisers and intelligence agencies have more to do with content than actual media owners, he added.  

“There’s been a longstanding problem, of particularly liberals painting with a broad brush, what they call as hate groups,” Dr. Ball said. “Whatever the Minister is saying could never be equated to anything coming out of the mouths of White supremacists, White nationalists, certainly the president of the United States. I’ve never liked that false equivalency that has been drawn between the Nation of Islam or any Black group with so-called hate groups,” Dr. Ball told The Final Call.

This is a reminder of the importance of developing independent media not subjected to powers that don’t care about the interests of Black people, he added.

“It’s a reflection of the history of even The Final Call. It’s important to remember that we will always need alternative, unsanctioned, and protected media outlets and places where we can always recreate a political and, hopefully, radical public sphere,” Dr. Ball said.

“What we get and what we have access to is highly manicured and selected,” he added.

“I am frankly not surprised at all, and I’m sure the Minister is not surprised that this would be done,” said Johnnie Cordero, chairman of the Democratic Black Caucus of South Carolina.

“They’ve been trying to silence the brother for a long time,” he said.

Mr. Cordero said one doesn’t have to be a member of the Nation of Islam to understand what they are doing to Minister Farrakhan. “That it’s unfair is obvious, but this country has never been fair to us,” he observed. But, he added, “we are long past the time when they (Twitter) or anyone else will tell us who we support … and what we believe.”

Dr. Ball said, “If it’s the Minister today, it’s been others in the past already; it’ll be someone else in the future.”

These platforms aren’t truly open spaces, but are subjected to ideological influences and groups and individuals with agendas, like the ADL and other organizations, that aren’t necessarily pro-Black, said defenders of Min. Farrakhan.  

Mr. Cordero agrees that with social media companies seeking to shut down voices like Minister Farrakhan, Blacks must establish their own platforms. As a remedy, there must be investment and a strengthening of Black media organs dedicated to speaking truth to power to protect the Black voices, he said.

Still, Mr. Cordero continued, targeting Minister Farrakhan, who has a 64-year track record of serving Black people, is like putting “gasoline on fire.” In the end, it’s going to backfire on them, he predicted. What they are doing is raising support for the Minister in the Black community angered by the singling out of their spokesman and leader, he said.

The De-verification and Twitter Assault On Farrakhan

Social media attacks on the truth and Nation of Islam Minister increase and raise questions about opposition to freedom of speech, free thought and Black self-determination.

Those who vehemently oppose the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan recognize the global impact he has and is having on the masses via an array of social media platforms and they won’t stop until his accounts are completely shut down.

“Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was a national security adviser, I think under Jimmy Carter, he said, ‘It’s easier to kill a million people than to control a million people.’ With the technology that’s now available: You and I are talking, and the words that we just spoke are on social media,” said Minister Farrakhan during a recent radio interview in St. Kitts.

“If it’s on Facebook, if it’s on Instagram, if it’s on Twitter, if it’s on any of the media outlets that this iPhone and smartphone, and the work of Steve Jobs and others have done, the whole world is at our fingertips in an instant. The control of the masses that has always been the purview of elites who control media and information that goes to the public—that’s over now!”

He continued, “So what you have in Black America, in the Caribbean, in the UK, in Africa, all over the world, is an instant communication that is causing the awakening of the masses. This is both good and bad. It’s good that we are awakening, which means we are demanding more, we are trying to correct the mistakes that we make, but we are also forcing government to do what government does not want to do for the masses of Black and Brown people.”

Evidently, the Satanic Jews and Synagogue of Satan hate the sight of his words, videos and images trending and spreading on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube and generating millions of views. They hate to see daily comments and testimonies from those who are instantly touched by him on every continent. So, it’s no surprise that specifically the past eight months the online campaign to ban Minister Farrakhan has intensified. However, they have been countered by online users inside and outside the Nation of Islam who support Minister Farrakhan and have appreciated his presence on social media the past seven years.

De-verification and Defending Farrakhan

On June 8, Twitter, Inc. de-verified Minister Farrakhan’s Twitter account (@LouisFarrakhan) by removing his blue verification badge. While the opposition celebrated the decision, supporters of Minister Farrakhan found it to be a frivolous attempt to derail his social media reach; boldly declaring that he is verified by God and verified in the hearts and minds of the people.

According to their website, “The blue verified badge  on Twitter lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic” and “a verified badge does not imply an endorsement by Twitter.”

According to their Terms of Service, “Twitter reserves the right to remove verification at any time without notice. Reasons for removal may reflect behaviors on and off Twitter that include: Intentionally misleading people on Twitter by changing one’s display name or bio. Promoting hate and/or violence against, or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. Supporting organizations or individuals that promote the above. Inciting or engaging in harassment of others. Violence and dangerous behavior. (Directly or indirectly threatening or encouraging any form of physical violence against an individual or any group of people, including threatening or promoting terrorism. Violent, gruesome, shocking, or disturbing imagery. Self-harm, suicide.)”

Why is Minister Farrakhan’s account de-verified then?

Many news outlets reported that Minister Farrakhan’s blue verification badge was ultimately removed due to a video posted to his account on June 6 with the caption, “Thoroughly and completely unmasking the Satanic Jew and the Synagogue of Satan.” The clip, only a minute and a half in length, is from the May 27 address he delivered at Mosque Maryam in Chicago.

“I wonder will you recognize Satan. I wonder will you see the Satanic Jew and the Synagogue of Satan which has many races in it because Satan has deceived the whole world,” said Minister Farrakhan in the posted video, which has over 800,000 views.

The Anti-Defamation League and others, such as CNN’s Jake Tapper, started attacking the entire message and that video clip in particular as being “hateful” and “anti-semitic.” Twitter, Inc. then started receiving numerous reports from those who flagged the video in hopes it would be removed for so-called violations of Twitter’s policies.

However, the email account connected to Minister Farrakhan’s Twitter page received multiple notifications from Twitter, Inc. with the following confirmation: “We have received a complaint regarding your account, @LouisFarrakhan, for the following content. We have investigated the reported content and could not identify any violations of the Twitter Rules (https://support.twitter.com/articles/18311) or applicable law. Accordingly, we have not taken any action at this time. Sincerely, Twitter.”

Many such as former Daily Mail reporter Karen Yossman tweeted out that they reported the same video yet received the same response from Twitter. If Twitter and their executives found no violations of their policies or terms of services in that video, what’s the motive for de-verifying Minister Farrakhan? Who is behind this?

Minister Farrakhan’s Warning Continues To Spread Globally Via Social Media

Thousands of people from across the country and the world watched and commented live via social media as the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan delivered a serious final warning, from the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, to President Donald Trump and the U.S. government. Seated in front of him at the Watergate Hotel were over 500 persons packed inside the ballroom—including members of the press.

Situated at a table, stage left, were members of the #FarrakhanTwitterArmy, the social media wing of the Nation of Islam. For the past several years, every time Minister Farrakhan speaks, live tweeting and engaging people with intelligent dialogue has been a critical component to ensuring the message is spreading online as far as possible. The digital truth trafficking strategy has not only included righteously weaponizing Twitter, but also YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

Along with streaming live via the Nation of Islam’s official website (NOI.org) and YouTube channel, the entire message was seen on Minister Farrakhan’s Facebook page. Audience members could be seen using their smartphone devices to post on their personal Facebook and Periscope accounts. His words created intense dialogue as the hashtags #Warning-ToTrump and #Farrakhan became top trending topics on Twitter.

The online discussion surrounding that Nov. 16 address hasn’t stopped. The full video file and countless clips are still being posted daily on Minister Farrakhan’s pages and many others. This has led to well over a combined five million views and over 50,000 comments from various parts of the world. As with every message he delivers, the short clips of salient points are keeping the conversation going.
