Today, June 16th, would have been Tupac Shakur’s 45th birthday. We lost one of hip-hop’s greatest to a deadly murder on September 13, 1996, in Las Vegas, NV.
Debates about who the “Top 5” is will go on forever, but one thing that cannot be argued is that Tupac was one of the top cultural icons of our times and caused a cataclysmic shift in hip-hop, music and the Black youth experience in America. And as we remember him today, we cannot forget about his beloved mother Afeni Shakur, who made her transition last month. I thank Allah (God) for her blessed womb that gave birth to such a revolutionary child. Also, I thank Allah (God) for her sacrifices and stance in the face of injustice as a member of the Black Panther Party and even after.
